Welcome to Carter & Carter, Attorneys at Law. For over 50 years, we have been serving clients in Wilmington and southeastern North Carolina with an emphasis on financial law, business litigation, bankruptcy, business law, contract disputes, and estate planning.

About Us
Carter & Carter is a full service law firm with an emphasis on bankruptcy, creditors’ rights, litigation, corporate matters, and estate planning. Carter & Carter has served southeastern North Carolina for over 50 years.
Oliver Carter, Jr., graduated from the Wilmington Law School in the late 1920s. After practicing in Elizabethtown, the JAG Corps in WWII, and Washington, DC, he returned to practice in Wilmington in 1954. Twenty years later, in 1974, his son James Oliver Carter joined him, and the firm became Carter & Carter. Oliver Jr. and Jimmy practiced together until Oliver Jr. retired in 1982. The firm continued as Carter & Carter except for a brief interlude in the late 1990s. In 2009, Oliver Carter III joined his father in the practice of law, once again bringing two generations of practicing attorneys under the same roof.

Working with Clients
We help our clients identify their goals, and we advise them as to how they may pursue and achieve those goals in the context of their legal rights and duties. To begin, we analyze each new matter and describe for our clients the legal strategies and alternatives they have available to them. We counsel our clients about the legal, financial, and moral factors related to each alternative. We explain to our clients the possible outcomes of each alternative, and we attempt to assign probabilities to each outcome and quantify the various results we anticipate. Once we’ve decided upon a strategy with our clients, we work hard to implement it while at the same time providing our client with updates, feedback, and reminders about important issues. We consistently resolve our clients’ legal matters to their satisfaction.

James Oliver Carter
James Oliver “Jimmy” Carter was born in 1949 and grew up in Wilmington, NC. A graduate of Wake Forest University (B.A. 1971; J.D., 1974), Jimmy was admitted to the North Carolina Bar in 1974, and he has been in private practice in Wilmington and southeastern North Carolina for 50 years.
Oliver Carter III
Oliver represents lenders and borrowers in connection with distressed debt, commercial disputes, and bankruptcy and is certified as a Specialist in Creditors’ Rights by the American Board of Certification. Oliver represents a wide variety of clients within the debtor-creditor context, including creditors and debtors in Ch. 7, Ch. 11, and Ch. 13 bankruptcies; adversary proceedings; state court litigation, and workouts.
